The Legacy of a Family Man, Soldier, and President
This book was created with one purpose in mind: to honor the life, leadership, and legacy of International President Cecil E. Roberts, and to place his story within the larger story of the United Mine Workers of America. From the earliest struggles in Latimer, Cabin Creek, Ludlow and Blair Mountain to the hard-fought victories in Washington, D.C., the history of our union has always been carried forward by individuals willing to sacrifice for the greater good. For the past forty-eight years, Cecil has been one of those individuals. His leadership has guided us through defining moments, his voice has rallied us in times of hardship, and his example has reminded us that the strength of this union has always come from its members.
The pages are more than articles or memories, they are snapshots of a movement that has endured for more than a century and a half. You will find reflections on the Blizzard family, whose courage helped shape our union in its earliest years. You will read President Roberts’ own recollections of the Pittston Strike, when our union stood firm against injustice and demonstrated to the world the power of solidarity. You will read about legislative victories, personal sacrifices, and the relentless fight to preserve healthcare and pensions for our retirees. And woven through it all is the story of a leader who never forgot where he came from and never stopped believing in the people he served.
